The Youth FactorYouths are taking part in politics in ever greater numbersSince the passing of the 26th Amendment, young voters have been consistently absent from the polls. Their underwhelming interest in voting has sparked "youth courting" recruitments in a couple of the last presidential campaigns with little success. Remember the 2004 "Vote or Die" slogan? It was cool enough to wear on a T-shirt, but failed to turn out young voters. However, this year's president campaigners have invigorated the apathetic young to show up at the voting booths and we are still months away from Election Day. What is their secret? |
FeaturedCUNY Joins Solar InitiativeWith the ever-skyrocketing costs of oil, new sources of energy are being sought after, namely solar power. CUNY has joined an initiative, The Solar Energy Consortium, which aims to "hasten the prevalence of alternative energy sources in New York." Rep. Maurice Hinchley, D-NY, is the creator of TSEC. CUNY has also partnered with SUNY New Paltz, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Cornell University for this initiative.A Helping HandA CUNY-wide effort to help Mexican and Mexican-American students succeed in all facets of life has emerged. The newly-created task force for Strengthening Education Opportunities for Mexicans and Mexican-Americans was developed in order to better address the social and educational needs of the local Mexican community. Areas of focus for the task force include community outreach, student recruitment, communications, scholarship opportunities and most importantly, dropout prevention services.Freshman 15What is Freshman 15? It is the general idea that freshmen are susceptible to gain 15 pounds in their first semester. In one study done by Cornell University, it was found that men gain six pounds and women four and a half pounds during their first year at college. One of the common reasons may be uncontrollable or unnoticeable eating and/or drinking. |
